Learn German (Deutsch)

Practise German with an AI tutor that explains why

German is logical once you can see the logic. Until then there are three genders, four cases and a verb that often waits until the end of the sentence. YaP is the place to practise between your lessons, ask the questions you didn't have time for in class and learn the German that matters to you.

Speak or type to the tutor. It answers in German, corrects what matters, explains the rule and asks you to try again.

Standard German, Hochdeutsch

YaP supports Standard German (Hochdeutsch). This is the German you hear on Tagesschau, in business meetings in Munich and Hamburg, and on the train to Berlin. It is the variant most courses teach and most exams test.

Regional dialects (Bavarian, Saxon, Low German, Swiss German) are not supported as a target. The tutor can recognise them if you mention a phrase but will reply in Hochdeutsch.

What a session looks like

After class. Your teacher covered prepositions and case tonight and it half made sense. You open a lesson and ask for more examples. Then you ask why it's "Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch" but "Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch". The tutor explains that prepositions like auf and in take the accusative for movement towards a place and the dative for where something is, while mit always takes the dative. It gives you a few more to try and corrects you as you go. The lesson is saved with a date and a description, so you can find it again before next week's class.

What you care about. Your partner's parents live near Stuttgart and you want to keep up on the Sunday video call. You ask the tutor to help. You learn that they are your Schwiegereltern, your parents-in-law, that "Wie geht es euch?" asks how they both are (with Sie: "Wie geht es Ihnen?"), and that the Bescherung, when the presents are opened, happens on Christmas Eve in many German families. You ask whether to call them du or Sie, and the tutor gives you the honest answer: follow their lead. Then you practise telling them about your week. Every new word is saved as a flashcard for review.

Or the football on a Saturday, the podcasts you want to follow, the colleagues in Munich. Whatever you need, YaP follows.

Ich lege das Buch auf dem Tisch.
Fast richtig! „Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch.“ Bei „legen“ gibt es eine Bewegung oder Richtungsänderung, deshalb steht nach „auf“ der Akkusativ: „den Tisch“. Bei einem festen Ort benutzt man den Dativ: „Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.“

Who it is for

You're learning German properly, not just for a holiday. Maybe you're working through a course, preparing to move, or picking the language back up years after school. Perhaps you have family or colleagues who speak it, a love of the music, the history or the football, or plans to live and work there.

You don't need to follow anyone else's order. Jump from this week's chapter back to the basics, or straight to the words you need tomorrow. YaP follows you and remembers everything.
